20s Plenty - Speed campaign  - Survey Results!

SURVEY RESULTS

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the public opinion survey on the “20s Plenty” issue.

The survey was publicised in our Newsletter, via Facebook and on the parish council website and contributions were accepted through an online form on the website, by e-mail or through the community views boxes in Bishampton and Throckmorton.

The results were as follows:-
By Individual responses:-
44% - In favour of adopting “20s Plenty” and mandatory 20MPH limits
56% - Felt Existing or alternative measures were better suited to our villages
 
Responses by Household (one vote per household/family):-
33%  - In favour of adopting “20s Plenty” and mandatory 20MPH limits
67% - Felt Existing or alternative measures were better suited to our villages

Whilst the proposal clearly divides opinion – the results suggest a majority preference for maintaining existing or other measures.
There were suggestions of cautionary signs (eg rural area warnings, drive carefully signs, wheely bin signs).

On the basis of the survey the Parish Council agreed that this currently provides no mandate to adopt mandatory 20 mph speed limits at this time. 

BACKGROUND TO SURVEY

There is a campaign currently supported by Worcester County offering support for the imposition of mandatory  20 MPH speed restrictions in urban settings and rural villages where communities strongly support such measures.

The campaign highlights that stopping distances and impact survival statistics, particularly for pedestrians, are significantly better at
20 MPH than 30 MPH - suggesting that pedestrian and traffic casualties and fatalities would be reduced by Wide Area 20 MPH limits.

There is a counter view, that whilst such measures may help in some situations, blanket imposition of 20 MPH is a needless step beyond existing measures (eg VAS) and not well suited to all rural communities or roads.

It is important that we understand the strength and balance of opinion in the communities BOTH in support and AGAINST such measures, as once imposed it is unlikely that such measures could be reversed so EVERYONE will be impacted whether for or against.
